HAPPY JOONIE DAY!

I haven’t actually read any of joon’s recommendations but I’d like to recommend one of my favorites, Gravity by Robert M. Drake. It starts off slow but by mid-read I found myself relating to the protagonist and the emotions expressed throughout the book. If anyone’s read/reading it, I’d love to know your thoughts!

Happy birthday to our beloved joon!
Before I began stanning BTS, I actually read a book called 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami. I immediately fell in love w the book, and I really related and appreciated the main character at the time. If anyone is interested in parallel universes, trippy reads, or anything of the like, I highly recommend!
I was also never the type to read a book more than once, but 1Q84 was the first book I willingly re-read over and over again (despite its length hahah) and it has become one of my all time fav books! Give it a read if u haven't, its def worth it (Also, can you imagine my surprise when I found out Sea was inspired by the book? My mind was blown lollll)

Happy birthday to one of the best leaders in K-Pop! I think Namjoon had recommended Demian in the behind the scenes for BST mv, so I borrowed the book from the library and read it. I really enjoyed the book. I also read Ursula Le Guin's A Wizard of Earthsea, and would highly recommend it to him. Another book that I would like to recommend is The Handmaid's Tale, Charlie Bone series, and not sure if he has read it, but also George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty Four

Happy Joonie Day!
I haven't read any of Joon's recommendations (yet, I WILL read them soon, when I find the time). So here I am recommending some of my favorite reads so far!
First is one of my most favorite series, The Lunar Chronicles, by Marissa Meyer. I love fairytales, and I love sci fi dystopian stories, and this is a perfect mix of both! And this is also one of my favorite series cuz it truly shows woman power, on both the protagonists' and antagonist's side, which I love.
Second, I'd like to recommend an author instead. If you like detective, crime, mystery stories, you HAVE to check out Agatha Christie's works. They are absolutely amazing. I love her storylines, and the way she tells her stories. My favorite books of hers are of Hercule Poirot. Definitely check out The Murder On The Orient Express, The Mysterious Affair At Styles, The Murder Of Roger Acroyd, and all her other works.
I hope you enjoy!

Thank you so much for all the love and comfort your work makes me feel every day! You're doing amazing
The nerd I am, I'm recommending two StarWars books
the first one is "Thrawn" written by Timothy Zahn, got not much to add to that lol Thrawn is one of my favourite characters and Zahns writing fits him so well! The second book is "Lost Stars" by Claudia Gray, read it in one afternoon, a story about a friendship/relationship between the Empire and the Rebellion

happy namjoon dayyyy
he's given so many recs I haven't gotten around to reading just yet but i did really like 'the unbearable lightness of being', i read it kind of slowly because I got it in english and the writing is quite dense if that makes sense lol but i enjoyed it and found so many little things that correlated to bts tracks. I'm also just a few pages away from finishing 'demian' too, which surprised me because it wasn't what I expected it to be.
i wanna mention also 'the midnight library' that we already talked about in the book channel, but i wanna insist and say it's Really Good and I did think of Joon a bit while reading lol like i just think he'd enjoy it maybe. I'm also in the process of reading the hunger games prequel that just came out not too long ago 'the ballad of songbirds and snakes', i absolutely loved the original trilogy (cannot recommend enough) and this one seems interesting as well so far

so my recommendation is kinda dark
it's called "things have gotten worse since we last spoke" and it's a short story about manipulation between two girls through emails and texts. it's kinda shocking to read (in a good way), just be careful when it comes to reading it!

Happy Birthday Joonie!
From the list of books that he has recommended/read, I have only read The Unbearable Lightness of Being and I loved it. I am in the middle of reading Kafka on the Shore. I also bought Demian but haven't gotten to it yet
(So you see how it is
) I have read a variety of books over the years, but if there's one book that I had to recommend and share with Joonie, it would be Pride and Prejudice. It is my favorite book of all time, and I don't get tired of reading it over and over again. Maybe he'll like it

Happy birthday to a fellow bookworm, Kim Namjoon! I have been inspired by him to expand my reading list to allow for voices who stories I may have otherwise overlooked. I am currently reading Almond, the book he was reading on In The Soop and I am enjoying it so far. I have a reading queue of books by Korean authors. From a tale following a family through Japanese occupation of Korea through the Korean war to a YA based on Korean mythology and even a book of Korean folk and fairy tales (I chose that one after the Run BTS episode of the members creating their own fairy tales).
I am grateful to Kim Namjoon and BTS for opening up my world of reading to be even more inclusive

I read several of Hermann Hesse's books in high school and they really moved me, so I felt like ah, I'm on the right wavelength with this group! I haven't been reading as much literary fiction or nonfiction as I'd like to lately, but I ordered Lisa Wool-rim Sjoblom's graphic memoir Palimpsest: Documents from a Korean Adoption for a class and it's really good - there was some interview lately where Minari came up and Namjoon mentioned thinking about diasporic Korean experiences so I'd recommend this! https://drawnandquarterly.com/palimpsest-documents-korean-adoption

happy birthday namjoon ! i've been planning to read "almond" but got spoiled, so i'm basically waiting for my mind to forget some details i oversaw.
my recs are a bit heavy x)
one of my timeless favorite books is "brave new world". i wouldn't be surprised if namjoon has already read it, but i still want to mention it. it made (and still makes) me think a lot about society, the process of socialization between human beings, authority and status-quo in the world we're living. despite the period it was released, it's actually (and unfortunately) a very modern book imo.
the other book i wanted to recommend is "paranoid park". it's about a 16 years old-skateboarder who accidently kills someone, and how they cope with that. it reminded me of "crimes and punishments", so stay safe if you read it.

Happy Birthday Namjoon! Thank you for being such a source of courage and curiosity. You've been an inspiration to so many people, and I hope you continue to feel the love and joy from everyone around you today that you should feel. I haven't been able to read many books as of late, but I definitely have a few recommendations for fun reading.
Encyclopedia Brown series - I know this series is meant for kids (think 7 - 11 year olds) but they're great fun for easy mystery solving/passing the time. Just in case you can't devote time to larger mystery novels (like Agatha Christie ones, which I also highly recommend).
I also suggest Good Omens (Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman) - it's a really funny take on the "end of the world" idea. I had a really hard time putting the book down.

I have not recently looked at Namjoons book lists but I know that there were books on it I have read when I looked at it in the past....I just don't have time to go look at it again right now...the book series I have most recently been re-reading and think many people would enjoy is The Discworld Series by Terry Pratchett What is nice about it is that there are many story lines and you can follow each one separately or read the books in the order they were written and keep coming back to characters you know from other books. I guess they would be considered comic fantasy as a genre but because it is meant to be a parallel universe in a way and a mirror of the world there is a lot of truth hidden in the background of the stories happening.
This got really long! What I wanted to add was some thoughts I have been having on reading in general
It doesn't matter what you read what matters is that you read...reading allows you to see the world through someone else's eyes to explore the mind of another person and to imagine. Reading opens your mind to new possibilities...so read even if it is "just a comic book" or "just a short story" what you read is not nearly as important as that you read.

Happy birthday to Namjoon, who keeps growing and showing everyone that dreams do come true. I'm happy that he keeps inspiring people while staying true to himself.
A short story I would recommend and he probably read is The Ones who Walk Away from Omelas. Most of you probably know about it from Spring Day.
It's a very philosphical story, in which you're faced with a dilemma, and it will haunt you. You can apply it to real life, so it makes it even more real.
(I will say, it has some disturbing themes, so if you're wary, do look for warnings)

Edited it a bit: soooo...... (1/3)
Best leader and ARMY president. HAPPY BIRTHDAY
Hmm...actually quite a few books that i list here are ones i read at school
the first 2 are originally in german, but english translations are available: i read both as my german books for graduation exam
Schimmelreiter (by Theodor Storm): mysterious and stories within stories, innermost story follows a young man and his ambitions throughout most of his life. Mystery, human relationships and all.
Im Westen nichts neues (by Erich Maria Remarque): its the story of a young man who (along with his whole class) enlisted for the german military during WW1 and his experience, hardships, and small fun and good things he experienced. (A movie also exists, black and white, and i think the book was among many burnt in Nazi Germany )
Other books i really liked were ones we read in english class (thanks to my english teacher
)
The importance of being Earnest (by Oscar Wilde): a fun play/lovestory set in past England. (tbh, at first I thought it was strange and a bit silly, but then I read it as such and it was actually fun.)
A town like Alice (By Nevil Shute): I think I read an easy reader version since I was still learning English back then, so it was probably shortened and i didnt understand it all. But its pretty much about a young british women who happens to be in malaysia during the time the japanese army invades during ww2 and she gets imprisoned. It shows her hardships but also friendships and much more.
A Brave New World (By Aldous Huxley): dystopia where everyone is being born (and made pretty much) to fit into a group with corresponding intelligence and social standing. It for one shows the life there, and also reflects on it (with a certain character later on). I personally found the aspect of "all parts of society are needed, and valuable in its own way" and how that is displayed in the story.

The curious incident of the dog in the night time (By Mark Haddon): a story written by an author with Aspergers, and the protagonist (who is writing part of the book as his diary) having Aspergers as well. Its a different book than many others. And the focus is not only on the story itself (which is rather simple, since it is also a childrens book) but also on the mind/thoughts of someone with Aspergers or Autism.
Another book i actually read in elementary school: (a shorter version is read at most schools here i guess, i also read the original)
Die schwarzen Brüder ("The black brothers" by Lisa Tetzner): while the single plot of the book may fiction, it is sadly based on facts. Backstory: in the 19th and early 20th century young children (usually boys 8-12yo), mostly from the poor valleys of the south of Switzerland, were sent to work in Milano as child laborers. Many as chimney sweepers (Spazzacamini) because they were small and thin and could climb into the chimneys to clean them. They were often treated poorly and sometimes died while working there during the winter.
The story follows a boy named Giorgio who is sold to work as such a Spazzacamini. During the time he makes friends and enemies. Within Milan many of the boys came to know each other and as a community were the black brothers (because of the chimney dust).

As for easier reads (mostly YA and/or fantasy) I really enjoyed the following:
Eragon/the inheritance cycle (my…. Childhood… classic though technically YA): a farmer boy named eragon finds a dragon egg, that hatches and together they must leave his village and.....adventure
The magicians guild (trilogy, "magic school")
Scythe (Trilogy, science-fiction, ppl no longer die from natural causes, to control population scythes "kill" (not called that though) do that. Two young ppl, who become friends, start an apprenticeship there
The girl in the steel corset (Steampunk, her character takes inspiration from Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. A group of young ......."special people" must safe the british empire from the machinist)
......way more books

happy namjoon day!! I honestly don't read as much as I used to but I want to recommend a book called 'The Buried Giant' by Kazuo Ishiguro. It's about an elderly British couple who live in a place where a mist has caused people to have forgotten most things about themselves and thier lives. The husband starts remembering that they have a son and so he and his wife set out to search for him. the book starts slow but once they set off it picks up. It's been awhile since I read this book but I remember loving it

Happy Joon Day!!
I always enjoy seeing the photos he posts when he's out enjoying nature or admiring art in a museum, very soothing to the soul.
I'm not the bookworm i used to be, but hope to one day look into namjoon's book recommendations. I'll recommend the last book i read years ago: pride and prejudice and zombies by jane austen and seth grahame-smith, a hilarious twist to an old classic.

i was going to recommend the lunar chronicles too!! one of my all time favorite series, im due for a reread soon because it's just too good, i know joonie tends to stray more towards nonfiction but i really think he'd dig it (and anyone else that likes scifi & fairytales)

Yes! I'm looking forward to rereading it once I finish with exams, so I can binge it

i think 'the murder on the orient express" will be etched in my memory for a long time - if not forever. just brillant like her other works as well !

HAPPY NAMJOON DAY
i really recommend the lunar chronicles from marissa meyer or the percy jackson and heroes of olympus series! i know these are fiction whereas most of the books he reads are nonfiction and very philosophical, i feel like these could be a fresh, fun start to some fiction series! i love rereading these series in my spare time because i used to be such an avid reader when i was younger hehe.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY the guy who showed us the universe from it's myriad sides .my recommendations may seem like a sort of rambling and i apologize in advance .
As we all agree joon had always taught us how to love ourselves ,how to accept our flows and strive to be just ourselves . That's why i recommend convenience store woman by sayaka muratta , This gem of a book engraved in my mind that it's okay to be criticized , it's okay to be looked at as a useless being , it's okay to be yourself , it's okay to find the real YOU in a shabby place or a silly hobby . Just do your thing and stop minding others. Since the society will criticize you no matter what you do. Keiko wasn't weird like the society claimed she was DIFFERENT that's why this book is a perfect way to just remember that the outside world has nothing to do with what it's going inside of you .
After reading convenience store woman i became sayaka's biggest fan . Which made me thirsty to look for another unique yet anticipating novel of hers . And i was lucky to come across Earthlings , i've never thought that it'll comes a day when i'll feel lost after finishing a book . I just couldn't move on and i felt somehow guilty about finishing it in six hours . To some extent ,this book is really unique that's why i recommend it for poppinpopians . However, if you are easily triggered DON'T READ IT . There are some vulgar passages of child abuse /violence/rape . The ending may or may not be satisfying it's all up to you . Lemme say it again if you are an alien read this master piece .
Joon's words had always been full of love and honesty . That's why letter to my daughter by Maya Angelou is something that the whole humanity should read . I'm not a big fan of autobiographies to be frank well let's not talk about how schools made reading it hellish for us but this book somehow changed my opinion about this genre .
" now they will know I am a charlatan that I really cannot write and write really well." Maya Angelou isn't just a charlatan ,maya is a mother .
This gem of a book is a truly captivating autobiography written by "maya Angelou", this super Africa American woman who picked up her teenage frail self who didn't know anything about life or childcare to become a successful Person throughout the years . Maya did her ultimate to peel delicately each layer of her persona ,her career and her struggles boldly in front of us . When i say "us" i mean her sons and daughters ,we are her children and she is our loving mum who gave us a precious Christmas gift at dawn after not being able to sleep the night before from excitement .
I'll be an imbecile if i say that the words : love , universe, cosmos, spring ,nature failed to remind me of bangtan . The boys who opened the doors of self discovery right before our eyes . Who made us love ourselves , reflect on ourselves and do our best to survive . Through their songs we felt the true meaning of these words didn't we ?
In this regards i recommend your soul is a river by nikita Gill . It's a light yet important collection of poems that'll tickle your soul just like bts songs did . I can't believe that just by reading the whole thing bts lyrics popped in my head out of a blue sky . When i say important , i hope that you find this book between your palms when you really need it . You'll really understand what i mean when you'lll read it . And you'll find yourself putting it in your re-read list .

The next book that i wanna recommend is Candide by voltaire , i first read it i was in 7 th grade . When my parents saw me reading it at first they said hey you won't understand it it's about the philosophy of optimism . Well i won't say that i perfectly understood it at the time . However , how you understand it depends on the timing and how much is on your mind . That's why i loved it. You'll understand it for granted but it's all up to how you understand it , how you see your world and everything . I read it again a few months ago . And i was surprised by the huge amount of metaphors that blended the whole novel in a perfect way .
The next one is the miracles of namiya general store by keiko higashino (i'm not sure about the Author's name but it's Keiko something) .
This book is somehow
hovering around *the future meets past thinggy , in a the middle of an old /haggard stationary store . Three thieves find themselves listening/ solving concerns of people from the past .
This book is perfect for comfort seekers , just take a deep breath and dive . You won't regret it .
Those were some of the books that read last month , i'll refrain myself from spamming the chat rn HAPPY BIRTHDAY AGAIN TO OUR LEADER WHO ENCOURAGED US TO LOVE OURSELVES AND WHO NEVER LET US WALK ALONE

I read many books and I love reading. Lately I read many lgtbq+ books and I love them. I really recommend "They both die at the end" but my all time favourite book is "Muh" from David Safier. I wish you a great birthday Joon

Happy Birthday Namjoonie
I hope you have a great day.
I’m recommending the book How to Do Nothing: Resisting the Attention Economy by Jenny Odell. More than a digital detox guide, the book is a philosophical treatise on the importance of attention and its role in our personal integrity and communal wellbeing.
I relate what I read here to our leader’s favorite pastime, Namjooning. A lot of Namjoon’s most personal songwriting came from time he has taken to observe, immerse in, and connect to his environment. I love that about him, and I wish to do more of that myself, too, hereon. Plus, it has a very pretty cover which I’m sure our plant-loving Joon would appreciate.

Other books i really liked were ones we read in english class (thanks to my english teacher
)

Dear Namjoon,
talented, gentle, peaceful, patient, calm, beautiful, brave, fearless and one and only leader of Bangtan Sonyeondan! I wish you a very Happy Birthday and all the best for your new year of life: health, happiness, love, success, friendship and sunshine! Please always be healthy, happy, safe and well!
My bookseller-heart likes it a lot how much you enjoy books and reading, which is why I would love to recommend you a novel as well that I personally enjoyed reading a lot.
It's a very lovely read that left a lasting impression on me despite it's short length. The title is "Saving Celeste" by Timothée de Fombelle. It's a quite sci-fi-esque and quite meaningful teenage love story and despite the topic a wonderful story for readers of all ages. It's romantic without being cheesy and impactful without being indoctrinating. Perhaps you'd like to give it a try?
Happy birthday again and I hope you had a wonderful day and were able to celebrate with all your lovely friends and family!
Sincerely
Lila J.

Happy birthday Namjoooon! I hope you had a great bday surrounded by love
I think I haven't read most of his recommendations yet but they're on my list~ I used to read a LOT but stopped because my life was really turbulent at the time, and now I'm trying to get back into it lol
I super recommend the book Frankenstein, it's my favorite book (together with the little prince lol) and made me think a lot back in the day when I first read it (I had to read it for literature class back in middle school). I plan on rereading it sometime~ tw // there's a rape scene and there's violence.
I also recommend Agatha Christie's books, they're just so good! Hercule Poirot is my favorite detective
I'm currently reading "Confessions" by Kanae Minato since I loved the movie, hopefully it's as good as the movie lol I'm also reading Pride and Prejudice (also because of the movie
) and Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman (it's entertaining so far!).
Hopefully I can finish at least one of these before the year ends

Happy Joonie Day!
I'm half just here to watch all the book recommendations, because I haven't actually been able to sit down to read in a long time, but I would recommend the Cirque Du Freak saga by Darren Shan. It's more for a like... younger audience, but I used to be obsessed with that series and it's still a good read now that I'm in my 20s.
Sorry if it has been mentioned before btw, haven't read through all of the posts yet

Happy Birthday Namjoon!!!

Took an offline day to go outside and see the sun to celebrate lol.
I haven't read books in a while aside from rereading a few series but one book I do recommend would be The Red Book by Carl Jung . It's probably one of the ones I recommend the most especially for those interested in psychology. I read it a few years back but couldn't finish it because it got difficult to read and understand some parts. It gives a very interesting view on some things and it's part of a massive project of his. There's also the Black Books which are 7 journals and I think they're all summarized in The Red Book i think??
Once again I hope Namjoon had a nice birthday and got to eat some cake

I haven’t actually read this myself but I’ve only heard good things and it’s next on my queue. Here is an article excerpt, it’s called “Crying in H Mart” and it’s written by Michelle Zauner, the singer of the band Japanese Breakfast. https://www.newyorker.com/culture/culture-desk/crying-in-h-mart

Happy birthday Joonie, our mindful leader, warm friend and hugest cutie
️
. This year Namjoon's birthday made me start reading Demian of Hermann Hesse finally. It's been a while since I read a novel and it is always a joy to read a book that a friend of mine recommended, trying to guess their views or feelings on certain points or discussing it with them after... so I am excited. I love every book of Ursula Le Guin and her Hainish Cycle books are my immediate answer for book recommendations. Thank you Joonie for being our inspiration and support, I wish you the best and I look forward to keeping on watching you follow your passion with your youthful optimism and gentle honesty

From Namu’s recommendations I read Kim Ji-young Born 1984. It’s a book that made me reflect on a lot of things I’ve never put thought into, it literally made me stop and think about how my life as a women has been affected and will be by the highly misogynistic society I live in. And to be honest it makes me super happy than Nam is someone who reads this type of books since feminism in Korea is not a very beloved move. Highly recommended!

I'm late but i really think that Namjoon would love The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros bc is so lyrical and it is very tender at describing things that some may consider meaningless but that looked by the right eyes can become things worth being shared
If u read it i will give a tw on sexual assault on the chapter Red Clowns but is nothing graphic and is a chapter easily skipable.
Here's the summary from goodreads:
Acclaimed by critics, beloved by readers of all ages, taught everywhere from inner-city grade schools to universities across the country, and translated all over the world, The House on Mango Street is the remarkable story of Esperanza Cordero. Told in a series of vignettes – sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes deeply joyous–it is the story of a young Latina girl growing up in Chicago, inventing for herself who and what she will become. Few other books in our time have touched so many readers.
